Blame the Medias!

Not long ago, I watched a video called Tough Guise. At first, I must say I wasn't very impressed with the content of the documentary. Men want to look and act like men, which is normal. However, I had never really asked myself why and what. Tough Guise explained it.
According to the video, guys, contrarily to what they want us to think, feel a strong need to conform.

Since media has grown to an exponential rate, the impact of the idea of masculinity has changed dramatically. He used as an example the very first Bat Man Movie or the first Superman Movie that ever came out, and the latest version of the same movie. Our idea of a hero now has restrictions. He must be tall, strong, dominant and controlling everything. Considering the fact that the medias has more influence on us than practically anything else, no wonder why the boys of today want to be big macho men. It also explains that 85% of murderers are men.

Something really contrasted during the first part of the doc. Towards the beginning, we meet a girl who is talking about guys. How, when they are in public, they'll pretend to be strong and not caring, but once we get a one-on-one with them, they're practically bigger girls than we are.! I didn't doubt that one second, I'm pretty sure we all know at least one guy like that. Later on, we see two Amerindians talking, discussing on how to be a man. One said to the other ''be more stoic'' (stoic: seeming unaffected by pleasure or pain; impassive. Being indifferent to emotions) . I guess talking about our feelings and are thoughts really is a girl thing. Point being: this is almost a fact. Men are different once they aren't surrounded by the pressure of being masculine enough, they get closer to their feminine side.

One thing truly bothers me, considering the real facts: since media controls everything, then why aren't doing something to stop the actual violence. It would obviously not be an over-night change, but it would defiantly be safer if they did. With not much reflection, anyone can come to this answer (q: why don't they do anything). The answer? Money! Will it ever be something else? The sad truth is, todays world's populations biggest value is money, and the only ones that can change something about it, value it more than we do. Will it ever stop? Will our values ever change? Will men ever realize that simply being a good old-style gentleman enough to please girls? Will men ever stop expecting so much from each other?

  1. Good posting Cleo. Men have changed as women have. The process is long and probably never ending.
